At Atelier Yvicor we alter party, wedding, First Communion and ceremony dresses using the same handcrafted sewing techniques we apply to our own collection. Size adjustments
To adjust the size, we examine where more or less room is needed and which seam allowances are available. Depending on the construction, we may need to work on darts, side seams or the back, and check the boning or inner structure. At the fitting, we check the drape and freedom of movement.
Hemming
We choose the hem finish according to the fabric, layers and fullness you want to preserve. It may need a fine hem, hand or machine stitching, or a lace edge repositioned to follow its pattern. Before cutting, we assess how the new length will affect the drape. We explain the options in our guide to hemming a dress.
Neckline and strap adjustments
We check the position and length of the straps, the shape of the neckline and the points where the fabric is under tension. Depending on the dress, we consider repositioning, shortening or reinforcing these areas. If there is beading or embroidery, we assess how to preserve it and which parts may need to be removed and reattached.
Cup inserts and interior fittings
Whether cups can be added depends on the fabric, structure and cut of the neckline and back. We assess this at the first appointment, along with the type of cup and how to attach it to the dress.
Dress transformations
Shortening a long dress to midi length, changing the sleeves or removing volume from a skirt are transformations that require rebuilding part of the pattern. We use our pattern-making knowledge to study the new proportions, check the drape and decide how to finish the altered areas. Whatever your size, in elegance has no size we explain our approach.
Alterations for guest dresses (weddings and First Communions)
If you need several garments altered for the same celebration, mention this when booking so we can organise the assessment. When considering the fit, we take into account how you will use each dress: walking, sitting or dancing may require different amounts of ease. Delicate fabrics
With chiffon, crepe, satin, tulle, silk, lace and embroidered fabrics, we consider how to mark, unpick and rejoin the material without damaging the area we are working on. The technique depends on the fabric and existing finish; embroidery may require part of the motif to be removed and repositioned after the adjustment.

What to agree before the alteration
Bring the shoes and underwear you will wear to the event. During the fitting, we check the fit standing, walking and sitting, because taking in one area can change the drape of another. The quote depends on the work required, the layers and the finishes; photographs help guide the enquiry, and examining the garment lets us confirm it.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I bring my dress?
We recommend getting in touch at least 2-3 weeks before the event to allow for 1-2 fittings, depending on the alteration. We confirm the schedule after examining the garment and checking workshop availability; complex changes may need more time.
Do you alter rented dresses?
It depends on the rental shop: some don't allow alterations. Check the terms with the shop first; if they allow it, we can advise you on which adjustments are reversible.
What are the most common alterations?
We can assess size adjustments, hemming, cup inserts and changes to necklines and straps. The construction of the dress determines which options are feasible.
Can cups be added to any dress?
It depends on the fabric, structure and cut of the neckline and back. We assess this at the first appointment.
