How to Dress as a Wedding Guest This Season

Being a guest is a delicate balance between looking your best and not stealing the spotlight. Here are dress options and how to refresh one you already own.

Wedding season always brings the same question to the atelier: "what do I wear that I haven't already worn to another wedding?" It might sound like a small problem, but for the person living it, it's quite a bit more than that.

Being a guest means a delicate balance — looking your best without stealing the spotlight; standing out without drawing more attention than the couple. It's a style exercise with its own rules.

Options from the collection

In Party and Ceremony Dresses there are pieces designed specifically for this role — not so understated that they go unnoticed, nor so bold that they compete with the bride. The Caprari Floral Dress and the Long Red Cross-Back Dress are two examples that hit that middle ground well.

"A good wedding guest is remembered for how she felt, not just how she looked."

When to bring the dress in for alterations before the wedding

If you already have the dress but it needs a last-minute alteration, don't leave the appointment for wedding week — during peak season, schedules fill up fast, and I'd rather have enough time to do it calmly.

Fabric changes depending on the time of the event

A morning or garden wedding calls for something different than an evening reception indoors. For daytime, natural fabrics like linen or flowing cotton breathe better and look fresher in outdoor photos; for evening, silk or satin bring the shine that artificial light calls for. If you're torn between fabrics for a made-to-measure dress, I usually recommend thinking about the time of the ceremony first and the color second — it almost always works out better that way.

Accessories that transform a dress

Different earrings, a small clutch instead of a large bag, or a light shawl can make the same dress work for a daytime wedding and an evening one without anyone noticing it's the same piece. It's a simple trick many guests don't think of, and it saves quite a bit when it comes to not repeating a dress season after season.

If you'd rather rewear a dress

Changing the length, the sleeves, or a specific detail can make a dress you've already worn to another wedding feel completely different. It's one of the alterations I get asked for most at this time of year.

Frequently asked questions

What fabric is best for an outdoor daytime wedding?
Linen and flowing cotton tend to be the most suitable — they breathe better and look fresh in photos, unlike heavier fabrics designed for evening indoor settings.

Can I wear the same dress to several weddings without it being obvious?
Yes, by changing accessories like the bag, earrings, or a shawl, and adjusting a detail on the dress itself if needed — it's one of the most common alterations during wedding season.

When should I bring the dress in for alterations before the wedding?
As early as possible, especially during peak season — schedules fill up fast, and it's better to have time to make the adjustment calmly rather than leaving it for the last week.

"You don't need a new dress to feel new in it."
