A dress design can be perfect on paper, but the fabric is what decides how it falls, how it moves, and how long it lasts. Here's how we choose the right fabric for each dress in the atelier.
When a client arrives with a photo of a dress she loves, the first thing I look at isn't the cut, but the fabric it's made of. Because the same design can look completely different depending on the fabric: elegant and fluid in one, stiff and unflattering in another.
"The design draws the dress. The fabric decides whether that drawing comes to life on the body."
Every fabric has its own way of falling. A fluid silk glides and shows movement; a fabric with more body, like mikado or some crepes, holds volume and structure. Neither is better than the other: it depends on whether the dress is meant to be fluid or to have presence.
Before choosing fabric, I always ask what occasion the dress is for and how the person wearing it will move: it's not the same to design a dress for sitting through an entire ceremony as one meant for dancing all night.
I always recommend seeing and touching the fabric before deciding, never choosing it from a photo on a screen alone. The real colour and texture change a lot compared to how they appear in a digital image.
A winter dress in fabric that's too light can feel uncomfortable, just as a summer dress in fabric that's too heavy can. Gramaje — the weight of the fabric per square metre — is one of the technical details we consider most, even though it's rarely discussed outside the trade.
"A beautiful dress that's uncomfortable stops being beautiful half an hour into wearing it."
Natural isn't always synonymous with a better result: some blends with synthetic fibre offer elasticity or wrinkle resistance that a 100% natural fabric doesn't. What matters is choosing wisely based on the dress's real use, not based on a label that sounds appealing.
A good fabric doesn't just affect how the dress looks on the day of the event, but how it holds up over the years. That's why, when we make a dress meant to be kept as a keepsake, we prioritise fabrics that stand the test of time without yellowing or losing their shape.
If you're thinking about a made-to-measure dress and don't know where to start with the fabric, you can contact Atelier Yvicor. It's exactly the first conversation we always have.
"No dress is truly one of a kind unless the fabric it's made of is too."
