Clothing alterations: how to give new life to your favorite garments

It almost always starts the same way: a client opens her closet, pulls out a garment she loves, and tells me "I don't wear this anymore, but I can't bring myself to throw it away." And that's where my part of the work begins.

Clothing alterations aren't just a technical solution. Often, they're a second chance for garments we already have a relationship with — the dress from an important wedding, the jacket you bought on a trip, that shirt that fits perfectly except for one detail.

What comes up most at the atelier

Hems, waists that need taking in or letting out, zippers that break right when you least expect it, seams that give way with use, buttons and closures that no longer match the garment. And, frequently, wedding or ceremony dresses that need a precise fit for the day that truly matters.

What information helps most when bringing in a garment

The more specific the explanation, the better the result. It's not the same to say "I don't like how it fits" as it is to point out exactly which area is bothering you — whether it pulls at the shoulders, whether there's excess fabric at the waist, whether the length feels wrong standing but not sitting. It also helps a lot to bring the garment clean and, if possible, ironed: that way I can see its real drape from the very first moment, without wrinkles clouding how the fabric actually behaves.

Alterations that usually pay off more than buying new

When the fabric and base construction are good, almost any alteration is worth it compared to replacing the garment — the cost is usually a fraction of what something new of similar quality would cost. Ceremony dresses are the clearest example: a garment meant for one special day is rarely easily replaced by another just as meaningful, so altering it almost always wins over searching for a replacement.

Repairing instead of discarding

Beyond the savings, choosing to alter instead of buying new is a decision that matters: the textile industry is one of the most polluting there is, and extending the life of what we already have is one of the most concrete ways to reduce that impact. Quality garments, especially ceremony pieces, deserve care rather than replacement.
