Measuring by Hand: Why No Sizing Algorithm Replaces a Dressmaker's Tape

Every few months a new app promises to calculate your perfect size from a couple of photos or four measurements you enter yourself at home. And every few months, someone walks into the atelier with a garment bought this way, one that "looked perfect on screen" but never quite falls right on the body.

It's not that the technology is bad. It's that the body isn't data: it's a volume that moves, that breathes, that has its own posture and its own way of walking. And that can only be understood with hands.

What a centimetre can't photograph

When I take a client's measurements, I don't just write down numbers. I watch how the fabric falls over the shoulders, whether there's a slight asymmetry between one side and the other — which almost everyone has — how the fabric behaves when the person sits down or raises their arms. That kind of information doesn't fit into a form.

That's why a made-to-measure garment isn't simply a garment "in your size": it's a garment designed for your specific body, with its own particularities, not for a standard mannequin that doesn't exist in real life.

When standard sizing does work (and when it doesn't)

I won't say industrial ready-to-wear clothing doesn't have its place: for everyday, budget-friendly garments, standard sizes do their job reasonably well. The problem appears with the garments that really matter — a ceremony dress, a work jacket, a uniform worn eight hours straight — where every extra or missing centimetre shows, and shows a lot.

The value of someone looking at you before sewing

Behind every garment that leaves this atelier there's a prior conversation: how you're going to use it, for what occasion, whether you need freedom of movement or a more structured silhouette. That conversation, together with the hand-taken measurement, is what makes the difference between a garment that simply fits and a garment that's truly yours.
