Every week I get messages that start the same way: "I don't know if this can be fixed," "I don't know if I dare take it to someone," "it's a very special dress and I don't want it to go wrong." Behind those doubts, there's almost always the same thing: fear of trusting an important garment to the wrong person.

And it makes sense. A party dress, a family suit, or a garment with history isn't just fabric. That's why, before leaving it in someone's hands, it's worth knowing what to ask.

It might sound contradictory, but it's one of the most reliable signs. A good professional will tell you honestly when an alteration isn't advisable, when the fabric won't hold up to a certain technique, or when the result won't be what you imagine. Communication matters as much as technique

Finally, pay attention to how they listen to you. A good alteration or a good garment always starts with understanding what that piece means to you, not just taking measurements. If you feel truly listened to, that's a sign as important as any sewing technique.
