The Art of Dressing Well: Why Artisan Tailoring and Bespoke Alterations Never Go Out of Style

A custom fit not only visually transforms an ordinary garment into an exclusive and durable piece, but also provides the confidence needed to fully enjoy any special occasion

There's a question I get asked almost every week at the atelier: "do I really need to alter something I could just buy ready-made?" And every time I give the same answer: it depends on whether you want a garment that works, or a garment that's truly yours.

Fast fashion has normalized standardized sizes for bodies that don't exist outside an industrial pattern. When a client tries on a dress and something doesn't quite fall right, it's not that her body is "badly proportioned" — it's that the garment was designed for an average, not for her.

"True elegance isn't about adapting to clothes, it's about clothes adapting to you."

What a good alteration changes

A hem that no longer drags, a strap that stops slipping, a fitted waist that finally sits exactly where it should: these look like small details, but they're what decides whether a garment is forgotten on the body or whether you have to keep adjusting it all night.

How long you'll wear the dress determines the type of fit

When a client comes in with a dress for a long event — a wedding, a gala, a graduation — I always ask how many hours she'll be wearing it. Fitting a garment for two hours of photos isn't the same as fitting it for a whole night standing and dancing.

Which alterations are requested most

The hem is, by far, the most requested alteration — and the one that changes most depending on the day's footwear. The waist fit comes right after, especially on dresses bought without a calm chance to try them on beforehand. And straps, though they seem like a minor detail, are one of the adjustments most noticeable in photos: poorly fitted straps completely change how the neckline looks all night, not just at the start.

When the fit needs more than one fitting

Simple alterations — a hem, a button — are usually resolved in a single visit. But with a ceremony dress that has internal structure, or an adjustment affecting several areas at once, it's worth planning at least two appointments: one to mark the changes and another to confirm everything works together, not just separately. Rushing that process usually shows in the final result.

Sewing with respect for what already exists

Altering and tailoring is also a way to consume with more awareness. Every garment we adjust instead of discarding is one that doesn't end up in a landfill. And a well-made alteration, respecting the original fabric and pattern, extends that piece's life well beyond a single season.

If you have a garment that almost fits but not quite, you can contact Atelier Yvicor. Sometimes the difference between "pretty" and "perfect" is just a matter of a few well-thought-out stitches.

Frequently asked questions

Which alteration is requested most often?
The hem, by far — and it's also the one that changes most depending on the footwear worn that day.

How many fittings does a ceremony dress alteration usually need?
At least two, if the dress has internal structure or the adjustment affects several areas at once — one to mark the changes and another to confirm them together.

Why do you ask how many hours I'll wear the dress?
Because the type of fit changes depending on the use — preparing a garment for two hours of photos isn't the same as for a whole night standing and dancing.

"Don't settle for a standard size: the dress of your dreams adapts to you."
