Ideas for Giving a Second Life to Baby Clothes Your Child Has Outgrown

When baby clothes stop fitting, you don't have to choose between keeping everything or donating everything. Here's how we transform those garments into meaningful pieces that stay part of the family.

There's a very specific moment almost every family goes through: opening the drawer of baby clothes and realising nothing in it fits anymore. Some garments were barely worn for a couple of months. And that's when the same question always comes up: keep it all in a box in storage, donate it, or do something different with it?

"Baby clothes almost never wear out. What runs out is the time they fit for."

Turning several garments into one meaningful piece

One of the transformations we do most often is taking several small garments — a onesie, a little t-shirt, a blanket — and combining them into a single new piece: a patchwork cushion, a memory blanket, or even a small framed textile artwork. That way the clothes stop sitting in a closed drawer and become part of the home in a visible way.

Notebook from the atelier

Before cutting any garment, I always ask what specific memory it holds for the family: the hospital onesie, the christening outfit, the first winter garment. That memory is what guides which piece stays whole and which gets transformed.

Keeping one whole garment, not all the clothes

You don't need to keep everything to hold onto the memory. Many families choose to keep a single, especially meaningful garment — the one from the first day home, for example — and transform the rest into something useful, or donate it to other families who can use it.

"You don't need to keep everything to forget nothing."

From baby clothes to doll clothes or dress-up costumes

Another option many families with more than one child love is turning baby garments into clothes for dolls or stuffed animals, or into small dress-up costumes. That way a younger sibling can, in some way, still keep close a garment that belonged to their older sibling.

Donating meaningfully, when it's time to donate

Not every garment needs to be transformed: sometimes the nicest thing is for another family to use it as it is. When we help decide what to keep and what to donate, we always recommend keeping the truly meaningful pieces first before donating the rest, so the donation happens calmly, not out of a rush to empty a drawer.

If you have baby clothes stored away and don't know what to do with them, you can contact Atelier Yvicor. We can help turn them into something that still belongs to your family's story.

"A onesie that no longer fits can still find a place at home, just in a different way."
