Before You Bring Your Garment to the Atelier: How to Prepare It for a Transformation

A few simple steps before bringing a garment to be transformed can make a big difference to the final result. Here's what I always check before we start.

Before a garment reaches my worktable to become something else, there are a few steps beforehand that make a huge difference to the final result. And they're almost always very simple things anyone can do at home.

When a garment arrives well prepared, I can spend the first appointment talking about design and possibilities, instead of sorting out basic issues that could have been handled beforehand.

Check this before bringing it in

Wash and iron the garment — that way I can see its real drape, without wrinkles throwing off how the fabric actually behaves. Check the seams and note any worn areas, so we can talk about them from the start. And if you have a garment or reference image in mind, bring it: it helps enormously to put what you're imagining into words.

"The more information you bring, the less time we waste guessing and the more time we spend designing."

Notes from the atelier

If the garment has old stains or any flaws, don't try to hide or cover them up before bringing it in. Sometimes those details completely change which transformation is viable, and I'd rather know from the very first moment.

Come with an open mind, not a fixed result

It's common to arrive with a very specific idea of what you want. And that's fine — but it's also worth listening to what's technically possible with that particular fabric and structure. Sometimes the best transformation isn't the one we imagined at first, but the one the garment itself allows.

If you have a garment waiting for a second life, you can contact Atelier Yvicor and we'll start there: looking at it together, unhurried.

"A good transformation begins before the first stitch is sewn."
