A well-made uniform shouldn't wear out after a few weeks. Here's what decisions we make in the atelier so a uniform holds up to months of real use, and how to care for it so it keeps representing your team well.
There's a question almost every company asks us before ordering uniforms: how long will they last? It's a logical question, especially for teams who wear the garment eight hours a day, five or six days a week. And the honest answer is: it depends enormously on where the effort goes before the first stitch is sewn.
"A uniform doesn't wear out from use. It wears out from the decisions made before it was made."
Not all fabrics age the same way. For heavy-use uniforms we favour blends with a resistant edge — like cotton and polyester in proportions suited to the industry — that withstand frequent washing at high temperatures without losing shape or colour. A cheap fabric might save a few euros at first, but it translates into uniforms that need replacing every few months.
I always reinforce the highest-tension areas — armholes, inner thigh, points that rub against aprons or belts — with a double seam. It's a small gesture that multiplies the garment's useful life.
A uniform that's too tight tears sooner from constant seam tension; one that's too loose catches, wrinkles, and looks bad even on excellent fabric. We always look for that middle point that allows freedom of movement without excess or missing fabric, adapted to each team's type of work.
"The right cut goes unnoticed when it's done well. It's very noticeable when it's done badly."
Even the best uniform needs a minimum of care from the team wearing it: respecting the recommended wash temperature, avoiding the dryer when the fabric doesn't tolerate it well, and not ironing directly over embroidery or patches. These are simple habits that, added together, extend the garment's life by many months.
We also recommend rotating two or three uniforms per person instead of a single daily-use one: it reduces the wear on each individual garment and, in the long run, is more cost-effective than replacing a single uniform every so often.
When we design a uniform for a company, we always keep the pattern and measurements for each team member. This means that if someone needs to replace a garment, or someone new joins, there's no need to start from scratch: the exact same fit that already worked is simply repeated.
If your team needs uniforms designed to last, you can contact Atelier Yvicor. We talk through the real use they'll get before choosing fabric and cut.
"A well-thought-out uniform isn't a recurring expense. It's an investment that holds up."
